composers like Handel, Mozart, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and others. A book about the "great composers" cannot really live up to that title if it does not cover these major composers. Instead, I recommend "Meet the Great Composers" vols. 1 and 2 by June Montgomery and Maurice Hinson. With the exception of Messiaen, most major composers of the last (and this) century are represented in Three Questions for Sixty-Five Composers. Although the book lacks photographs or musical examples, it's well indexed and has diagrams illustrating the process of composition not only by, perhaps predictably, Xenakis, but also Andriessen.

The colourful illustrations (found in every page of the book) are very visually pleasing - some of which are even arresting - this book makes for a truly light coffee-table read; however, it is not very informative nor comprehensive - every composer is only glossed over with merely one to two pages dedicated to each, and many of their major works bore no mention/5.

I've been reading Michael's excellent book of interviews with many of today's top film composers. I've never seen interviews of some of these composers like Bruce Broughton as an example. So this is a book filled with insights about working in film in today's environment. Great book!!5/5(5).

This book had brief biographies and lists of the most important compositions by 50 composers, all white, male, and either European or of that ancestry, judged by the author to be the greatest.

Most were indisputably great but I question why there were no women, or people of other than European ancestry.4/5.
